Neurovascular Jordi Jiménez Conde

The Neurovascular Research Group (NEUVAS) was established in 2005 at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona. Currently, the group is accredited as an AGAUR consolidated group (2021 SGR 00044). It has priority funding from the RICORS-ICTUS and various national and international competitive projects. We maintain a strong commitment to translational research, always exploring a synergistic approach that encompasses both clinical and basic objectives.

Experience in Cerebrovascular Research and Collaborations

NEUVAS has extensive experience in the field of cerebrovascular research and has carried out collaborative projects that have resulted in significant scientific output in areas such as stroke epidemiology, genetics and epigenetics. Our main pillars are the BASICMAR registry (PI051737) and the HSA-MAR registry.

The BASICMAR registry includes more than 10,800 stroke patients evaluated at Hospital del Mar and provides epidemiological, clinical, radiological and prognostic data. In addition, the HSA-MAR registry collects information on patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage and patients with vascular malformations, reaching 1,200 subjects registered to date. Both registries are associated with a repository of medical images and a biobank of biological samples (serum and gene library). We greatly appreciate the collaboration of the patients who participate in our registries.

Collaborations

We maintain regular collaborations at the national level with other clinical and cardiovascular genetics groups from Hospital del Mar Research Institute, ISGlobal, Applied Pharmacology, Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research, IDAEA-CSIC, as well as with various researchers from the RICORS stroke research and the stroke care plan in our community. At the international level, we collaborate with researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Center for Genomic Medicine of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Broad Institute, groups from the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC) and groups from the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence (Rhode Island, USA). Within the Omicas-Mar line, we collaborate especially with groups from UMC Utrecht, Southampton University and University of Geneva within the framework of the ISGC.

Meetings and venues

We hold a weekly NEUVAS group meeting to share news and updates on active projects, plan dissemination and training aspects, and discuss technical aspects and possible solutions. In addition, our members participate in different weekly meetings and clinical sessions related to the Neurology Service, such as sessions on cerebral vascular malformations, carotid stenosis, patent foramen ovale, and bibliographic sessions. Each line of research also holds its own periodic meetings.

We have our own spaces assigned to the group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, located within the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB) building, adjacent to the hospital. We have the infrastructure and experience to conduct clinical trials in both the acute and stable phases of stroke.

Links with the University

Our group is linked to the Pompeu Fabra University. The principal investigators of the group are part of the faculty of the Faculty of Health Sciences, where they teach in different degrees, such as Medicine, Biology, Biomedical Engineering and Physiotherapy.
