IMIM participates in the ESOF 2008

More than 3,000 scientists from all disciplines, politicians and businessmen will participate in 112 conferences and debates with 430 speakers. 20,000 visitors are expected for more than 70 expositions and public events for young people and families. These are some of the figures expected for the third meeting of the multidisciplinary, transverse ESOF2008, EuroScience Open Forum, organised by EuroScience and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) that will be held in Barcelona (Recinte Ferial de Montjuïc 1, Palau de Congressos) from the 18th to 22nd of July.

IMIM is participating in two scientific debates and an activity open to the general public.

  • Doping and Society: Moving towards the perfect human machine? Scientific debate organised by Jordi Segura, director of the IMIM Anti-Doping Control Laboratory and member of the “Group Games” of the International Olympic Committee. With the participation of renowned international experts, during the debate a general overview will be given of the fight against doping from different perspectives: scientific, institutional, ethical and from athletes themselves. Emphasis will also be placed on the future evolution of anti-doping control as seen from the perspective of the laboratory scientist in the context of a clean game and protection of health.
  • Drug Addiction: from mice to mind to society. The objective is to gather international experts on drug addiction and neuroscience from various fields and specialisations. Two forums will be created, one with the researchers who work in basic sciences and human studies and another with political experts who occupy posts of responsibility in different institutions. The final objective consists of understanding how drug addiction affects human cognition and behaviour, and how its effects can be prevented or cured. This session has been organised at Pompeu Fabra University, with the participation of Dr. Magí Farré and Dr. Marta Torrents, both of whom are from the IMIM-Hospital del Mar Neuropsychopharmacology Programme.
  • Molecular simulations on Playstation 3. Demonstration open to the general public, led by Gianni de Dabritiis from IMIM-UPF’s Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics, where he will explain how we can all help science from home thanks to the PlayStation 3, and with just a USB flash drive.

ESOF is not a typical scientific meeting. Its special multidisciplinary and transverse structure unites researchers from many diverse disciplines who can come into contact and directly debate in the same forum with other specialists involved in the scientific field: politicians, communications specialists, businessmen, students and, in the open sections, the general public. This biennial meeting is an initiative of the European organisation EuroScience, which has more than 2,100 members from 40 countries, among them scientists, research managers, politicians and businessmen. EuroScience assigns the management of each edition of ESOF to an organisation and a city, in this case the FCRI and Barcelona. The first edition took place in 2004 in Stockholm, Sweden, and the second in Munich, Germany in 2006. Barcelona’s designation as venue for ESOF takes advantage of and extends the growing recognition of the city as a main player in areas such as biotechnology and biomedicine.
