Principal Investigator

Toni Celià-Terrassa, Ph.D.

Junior Group Leader of the Cancer Stem Cell Properties and Metastasis Laboratory in the Cancer Program, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics Group at the IMIM. He obtained the Miguel Servet grant and incorporated the IMIM Cancer Program in January 2018. His Ph.D. studies already unveiled novel concepts about the implications of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and its reversion during the metastatic colonization of distant tissues.

In 2012, he moved to Princeton (NJ, USA) where he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Dr. Yibin Kang´s Lab; Princeton University (2012-2017). There, he specialized in breast cancer metastasis research. He elucidated the intricate molecular mechanisms of normal and malignant mammary stem cells to shield from immune system signals in ER-negative breast cancer. In addition, he also studied the spatiotemporal dynamics of EMT and MET generating distinct metastatic-gene programs. In summary, he has done remarkable contributions to the mammary stem cell field, the cancer stem cell, and the metastasis colonization research.

Irene Sangrador, PhD

Irene Sangrador

Postdoctoral research associate, since October 2018. She obtained her PhD in biomedicine by the University of Barcelona in 2018 in pancreatic oncology and tumor microenvironment. Her studies led to understand how EMT transcription factors, in particular Zeb1, activate stromal fibroblast that promote pancreatic cancer progression. She is currently working in in the immunomodulation of cancer stem cells (CSC) in breast cancer metastasis.
