Jordi Alonso, Montse Fitó, Joaquim Bellmunt and Margarita Triguero-Mas among the most cited scientists in the world

Jordi Alonso, director of the Epidemiology and Public Health Programme, Montse Fitó, coordinator of the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition research group, Joaquim Bellmunt, a researcher in the Cancer Molecular Therapy research group and Margarita Triguero-Mas, researcher in the Healthy cities and environmental justice (UAB-IMIM) appear on the list of the world's most cited scientists published by Clarivate Analytics, a company that provides services in research, patents and other areas related to innovation.

This annual list identifies researchers who have displayed significant influence in their chosen research field(s) through the publication of numerous highly cited articles over the past decade. Their names are drawn from publications that are in the top 1% for citations by field and year of publication in the Web of Science citation index.

The method for determining the "Who's Who" of the most influential researchers is based on the data and an analysis by bibliometric and data experts at the Clarivate Institute for Scientific Information. It also uses the counts to identify the countries and institutions that these scientific elites come from.

This is the seventh edition of the Clarivate Analytics list, which this year  comprises 6,389 researchers from 60 countries. The scientists featured on the list have been chosen from the top 1% of 21 research and social science fields. This edition takes into account approximately 150,000 articles published between 2009 and 2019. These are, therefore, the researchers who have had the greatest impact in their respective areas.

Jordi Alonso, who has already appeared in the list for the four previous editions, is assigned to the discipline of Psychiatry and Psychology, as his research focuses on the perception of health and the frequency and burden of mental illnesses, as well as their determinants at the populational scale. Jordi Alonso is also a Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at CEXS-UPF and an associate researcher in the CIBER on Epidemiology and Public Health.

Montse Fitó, who appeared in the two previous editions, is assigned to the category of Agricultural Sciences, as her research is linked to nutritional intervention studies with the aim of finding out how diet affects cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease, as well as establishing the cellular and molecular mechanisms that promote these benefits. Montse Fitó is also a researcher in the CIBER on the Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition.

Joaquim Bellmunt, who featured in the previous edition, appears in the Clinical Medicine category as his research is linked to clinical genito-urinary oncology, drugs aimed at new therapeutic targets, and translational research in the field of immunotherapy and growth factor receptors and angiogenesis, among other things, as targets in cancer therapy.

Margarita Triguero-Mas, appears for the first time in the list for her studies on the social determinants that make healthier and fairer cities possible, and for the studies on the social and health impacts that result from the planning and creation of  cities greener, more sustainable and more resilient.

This year's list continues to recognise researchers with the highest levels of influence and impact, as it includes 26 Nobel Prize winners, including three that were announced this year: Emmanuelle Charpentier, Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, Germany (Chemistry), Jennifer A. Doudna, the University of California, Berkeley, United States (Chemistry) and Reinhard Genzel, Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, Garching, Germany and the University of California, Berkeley, United States (Physics). Also included are 77 Clarivate Analytics Citation Laureates: people who, through citation analysis, have been identified as Nobel-class researchers and potential Nobel Prize recipients.

Congratulations to everyone!
