SI 2020 Symposium Young Researcher Award presented to Dr. Robert Güerri

Dr Robert Güerri, section chief of the Infectious Diseases Service at Hospital del Mar and a researcher in the Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobial Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), has received a Young Researcher Award from the SI 2020 Symposium, organised by the pharmaceutical company Janssen.  The aim of this initiative is to promote the investigative work of young researchers, whose careers have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the field of HIV. The symposium, which should have been held in March, had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The review panel, comprising Dr. José Ramón Arribas, from Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, and Dr. Josep Mallolas, from Hospital Clínic, assessed the translational nature of the candidates' work. They also took into account the published studies they have led or participated in, as well as their conference presentations. With this in mind, Dr. Güerri came top out of twenty candidates.

Dr. Güerri, section chief of the HIV Unit in the Infectious Diseases Service, coordinator of conventional and COVID-19 hospitalisation at Hospital del Mar and a researcher in the Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobials research group at the IMIM, has a degree in medicine from the University of Barcelona and has been specialising in internal medicine since 2009. He also holds a Master's degree in the Application and Control of Hospital Antimicrobial Therapy from the UAB and is a Doctor of Medicine summa cum laude from the same university. He has pursued his healthcare career at Hospital del Mar.

He is the principal investigator on several projects, including FIS 19/0019 on research into the inflammation associated with chronic viral infections, at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), and is a research associate in the laboratory of Professor Sungjin Kim in the Department of Immunology and Infections at the University of California-Davis.

He has published over forty articles in indexed journals and is the first author of eighteen of these. For one of these, he led a study that has led to a paradigm shift in the prevention of bone fractures in HIV sufferers, indicating that its origin lies in the infection itself and not in the treatment.
