  • Andrea Cerutti obtains the ERC Advanced Grant.

    The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded scientist Andrea Cerutti, an IMIM researcher and ICREA professor, an advanced grant, with funding of 2 million euros over a five-year period. The objective of the ERC Advanced Grant is to support excellent research projects in the field of science, which are highly innovative and led by prominent researchers with renowned international prestige, who may be from any EU member state or associated country.

  • Discovered the existence of neutrophils in the spleen

    For the first time, it has been discovered that neutrophils exist in the spleen without there being an infection. This important finding made by the research group on the Biology of B Cells of IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) in collaboration with researchers from Mount Sinai in New York, has also made it possible to determine that these neutrophils have an immunoregulating role.

  • Bidding farewell to the participants of the PREDIMED study

    Last 14th December an event was held at the PRBB Auditorium; it was organized by the IMIM Group on Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition to say goodbye to and thank the participants in the PREDIMED study, their involvement, availability and enthusiasm during the four years over which the project has developed (2003-2011).

  • Experts from the Hospital del Mar prove that having osteoarthritis leads to more fractures and falls in post-menopausal women

    A study lead by a team of researchers from the Hospital del Mar and its research institute, IMIM, concludes that post-menopausal women with osteoarthritis have a 20% greater risk of experiencing bone fractures due to osteoporosis and are at greater risk of falling –nearly 30% more than post-menopausal women without osteoarthritis

  • Half of the patients at risk for cardiovascular disease are not receiving adequate treatment

    The Spanish Society of Cardiology (Sociedad Española de Cardiología or SEC) warns that the percentage of the Spanish population with a good control of cardiovascular risk factors is no higher than, at best, 65%, and at worst, 34%.

  • New Leads on the Genetic Origin of High Blood Pressure

    The International Consortium for Blood Pressure genome-wide association Studies (ICBP), an international project in which researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) have participated as the only Spanish researchers, has identified 29 loci or genetic characteristics, 16 of which are new, associated with the risk of presenting with high blood pressure in a population of European origin

  • An IMIM study is the key to the approval of a health claim by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

    At the request of the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a scientific opinion on a food product, namely, about the health properties of olive oil. This has been possible thanks to the contribution of the cardiovascular risk and nutrition research group at the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute).

    An International study to be published online on the 6th March in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics identifies 13 new genetic characteristics associated with coronary artery disease.Genetic factors are thought to explain about 40% of the risk of the population presenting with coronary artery disease.
